about
I go to a lot of parties where a double album with a white cover and lots of Warhola coke bottles gets pulled out someone's record cabinet and flung on once the party cruises into the wee small hours. Great to hear and pretty sumptuous to look at, sort of an uptown Athena poster take on a VU theme. It’s just called The Velvet Underground.
Sometimes if I stay all through the night, I'll wake up on a sunny Sunday morning to find my host delving into some vinyl that's a little more hardcore, a box set of bootleg stuff. Cycle Annie and Ferryboat Bill. Blasts from antiquity such as The Ostrich, Lou’s attempt to create a Tin Pan Alley dance song, as time worn as the picture I've seen of the early VU on an NY rooftop with their first drummer: yacht-capped and with Allen Ginsberg glasses, percussionist, poet and calligrapher Angus MacLise. Tower blocks looming like Leith’s austere Cairngorm and Grampian high-rises behind them but in my head Dakota Building-Gothic, shrouded in unknowable mists of 20 years.
Sometimes mein host might put on Metal Machine Music. The choice of the poseur/connoisseur. Gorgeous cover, Great liner notes. "My week beats your year".
lyrics
(You’re making it clear that your week beats my year) x2
I bought the words and music of a certain Lou Reed
Right now I cannot think of a more decadent deed
(You’re making it clear that your week beats my year) x2
My favourite music turns me on, blows my mind
Ooh. I like it rough and from behind
The times that we have here….
You’re the deadpan man and I’m letting you steer
Cos your week beats my year
When I’m seventeen and stupid,
And keep reading about what Lou did
I’m smoking some grass
It’s not really drugs
The girls I’m in love with
Just want brotherly hugs
It’s abundantly clear that anybody’s weekend beats my year
You’re making it clear that your week really beats my year
My week beats your year
It’s got the action, it’s got the fear
Your far away look don’t get you near
Cos my week beats your year
You're idling baby, I was no slouch
even when reclining on the cum-stained couch
At the Factory isn’t it queer
That my week still beats your year

Most of these songs were available on the 1995 "Yes darling, but is it Art?" CD release. I'm assuming the masters are gone, which is fine if you do a good transfer from the original records. When I saw these were remastered, I was looking forward to some light de-clicking and removal of rumble from the original transfers. This isn't the case. Instead they added some weird super loud "tape hiss" for lack of a better term, and it makes it sound harsh. Very disappointed in the "remastering". numanoid1979
